First things first ... Okay, first, let's get the other disclaimer out the way - some of these 'tricks' might well seem laughably obvious to you, but I'm just taking a wild stab at what you know and don't know, and what you might want to do (or not). So don't blame me if you know most of this stuff or couldn't be bothered with half of it anyway - just cherry-pick the stuff you need. If you find things you knew already, treat yourself to a smug, self-satisfied grin and congratulate yourself - you're actually better informed than you realised. And if you can't quite recall how to look that smug, please refer to the pictures on the left (and some others scattered throughout the site). A tale that grew in the telling As I was compiling these pages, the stuff just kept piling up till it became quite a big list, but it still doesn't cover everything, so if there's something obvious I've missed out ... well, that's because it was just too obvious to bother with (that gets me off the hook, hopefully!). If you do a Google search for 'pc tips and tricks' (use any keywords you like) I'm sure you'll find dozens of sites bulging with the good stuff, some of them better or more comprehensive than what's in here, and some just so complicated and elaborate you'd need to be a computer professional to understand them (and if you were, why would you be reading up on tips'n'tricks? Huh? Answer me that then!). Keeping it basic The main idea is to help you understand some of the basics of computers - how they work, how to use them, etc. Also to introduce you to some essential concepts, such as keeping your system safe, using really efficient shortcuts, and where to find some really great programs (often free). I'll point you in the direction of some great internet resources too, stuff that's really worth checking out. These are just some of the things that have worked for me and that I've found useful and time saving. You just tend to pick these things up over a period of time, so I guess reading through this might save you some time as well. Keeping it simple Generally, I've kept it aimed at the likes of you and me, the average computer user (oh yes, I'm just like you, an average computer user ... I am by no means a 'geek'). In fact, some of the hints and tips I've come across on the web might as well have been written in Greek (or Geek) for all the good they did me, didn't understand a word. At least these are more or less understandable (well, I've done what I can to keep it plain and simple). Have a little nibble And don't try to absorb the whole lot all at once. Treat it more like a reference, a sort of smorgasbord of information - just have a little nibble here and there, and when you're not sure about something, check back in case there's something here that might explain things a bit better. Cats? And what's with the cats on the left? No idea. They just kinda popped up. They're probably from the IT department. |
